Exercise Contributes to Your Health & Wellbeing

First let's talk about appropriate and adequate exercise. Getting regular exercise is probably the single best thing that we can do for our bodies. It is also the most natural, most convenient, the safest, cheapest and the most empowering of all self care techniques.

A small sampling of the proven health benefits of physical activity:

Exercise can sharpen the senses, enhance memory function and inspire self esteem.

The need for more exercise is evidenced often by the feeling of "squirminess" when the body is inactive for extended periods of time.

Today's work environments, long commutes and limited free time make it difficult to obtain the exercise that the body requires in order to keep the blood circulating easily, so that it can nourish all of the cells in the body.

The lungs are stimulated with exercise to bring in larger supplies of oxygen to circulate in the blood, which is then carried to all parts of the body.

There are many forms of exercise that can be incorporated into your lifestyle. The important thing is to choose something that is enjoyable and that you can practice consistently at least every other day, more often if possible.

Walking is excellent, and requires no special equipment other than a comfortable pair of shoes. Many people find running enjoyable, Yoga, Tai Chi, Karate or other martial arts, bicycling, swimming...the options are only limited by your time and energy level.

Good to remember, though, if you have not been exercising regularly, start slowly and build up, and always check with your medical practitioner to be sure the program you plan to start will be beneficial to your particular body.

The way you choose to exercise depends on your life style, time and energy level. It is best to include some form of physical movement into your daily routine, if only for 15 minutes. As your strength and endurance build, you can increase the time involved.

Legendary fitness expert, Jack LaLanne says that the number one thing is exercise. You have to take care of your 640 muscles. You can eat perfectly but if you do not exercise, your muscles will atropy and loose their strength and you will loose all of your energy and vitality by inactivity.

At 87 years old, Jack is the perfect picture of health and fitness. He says that the catalyst is exercise. It is what makes everything happen, your digestion, your emimination, your sex life, your skin, hair, everything about you depends on circulation. And how do you increase circulation? With vigorous exercise. He claims that even someone who is 60 years old and has not exercised can double his/her strength and endurance after exercising for 6 to 8 weeks. You are never too old to begin.

Many trainers recommend an increase in your heart rate levels for 10 minutes at a time, then cool down and return to normal resting heart rate. Some people find that working with a personal trainer is an ideal way to build muscle tone and strength. The added benefit here is that you are encouraged to be consistent, and taught ways to move that are less likely to bring injury to your body.
